You Disrespected Me!

Written by Jay Dunn. Posted in General Observations

Am I the only one that has a cow when someone says that? Am I the only one who believes that the use of the word disrespect as a verb in the past tense is improper? I'm wondering about that because I seem to hear it on a daily basis.

Well, after some research I had to resign myself to the fact that it is an accepted use of the word according to the dictionary. But, the good news is that it does appear to be unacceptable to purists of the English language. Apparently, I am not the only one that wants to blow a blood vessel when someone says it. Even though this is just one of many irritating examples of a "lack of respect" for the English language, it's just happens to be the one with the current momentum to inspire an article.

I had intended to go into detail about respect and just why this phrase is so irritating, but in researching to backup my claims, I found this cool website called The Vocabula Review. It's dedicated to what they term as "the devolution of language". And what's really cool is that they have "disrespected" on their list of "worst words".

So instead of a lengthy diatribe about "disrespected" and other linguistic irritations, I just ask that you check out The Vocabula Review. There's enough there to explain it.
