Conservative Talk Radio

Written by Jay Dunn. Posted in Politics

I spend most of my time in the car listening to talk radio. I mention this because it is my primary source of news and topical debate. And because of my political leanings, it means that I'm listening to points of view expressed by the likes of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Now I'm not a fanatic and I don't really like to label myself. I'm an extreme liberal on some things and an extreme conservative on others. So believe me, I can find these guys just as irritating as I do entertaining.

Glenn Beck - This guy is pretty screwed up in the head. He's an alcoholic, paranoid nut case. But, he's really funny. There's nothing like driving around laughing about the end of life as we know it at the hands of radical Islam (or since November 2008, our own government). There may be something to what he's saying, but it won't matter to me because I'm going to die in a traffic accident while laughing hysterically.

Rush Limbaugh - He gets it - mostly. When he's on some chauvinist, pro-life or anti-gay rant, you have to take him with a grain of salt. But when it comes to the fundamental things that it should mean to be an American, he's right on. America is about the ability for people to help themselves to the American Dream. It's not about government handing it to you on a platter and then you bitching when the plate breaks. And Rush will listen to a caller with an opposing point of view and at least try to engage them in a conversation. Kudos Rush.

Sean Hannity - He's a bit too hard line. He's not really about discourse with the opposition. He's combative and a caller with an opposing point of view will have a hard time getting a word in edge wise. I will listen to him until Sports Talk San Antonio with Mike Taylor begins on another station. Then it's goodbye politics, hello ball game.

I know that these guys really irritate a lot of people (i.e. liberals). And I know it must be frustrating for them that liberal talk radio doesn't exist to the same degree. Except for National Public Radio, they've really got nothing. But for me, that's OK. I'd rather die in an accident from laughing than crying.
